As President Biden Visits Allentown, Nutter Urges Administration to Prioritize U.S. LNG Exports to Cut Global Emissions by 50%

(Washington) – Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, member of the Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future Leadership Council, released the following statement urging the Biden Administration to prioritize U.S. LNG exports to cut global emissions:

“As President Biden wraps up a visit to Allentown, Pennsylvania, it’s important to highlight how states like Pennsylvania can play a key role in the efforts to fight climate change by moving natural gas abroad to displace global coal. Moving independently certified, responsibly sourced U.S. LNG from Pennsylvania to nations overseas can cut emissions from coal power plants in half, just as we did here in the United States. Developing nations want to replicate those successes, but need stable supplies they can count on – and without natural gas, they default to coal, making our climate challenges even worse. The domestic infrastructure necessary to move natural gas where it’s needed must be prioritized as part of the global climate fight, which can increase American competitiveness in the world, enhance collective global security, and bring countless jobs to our area with reliable, affordable energy sourced right here from Pennsylvania.

The Biden Administration is already prioritizing our region for other clean energy projects too. Last fall,  the greater Philadelphia area was selected as the Mid-Atlantic Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2), part of President Biden’s historic Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that is strengthening America’s domestic manufacturing base, finding ways to decarbonize our economy, and create new jobs and economic opportunities. Projects like this are a testament to the expansive opportunities for economic growth in this region of the country.

We believe natural gas working with renewable energy and other cleantech solutions is the best pathway forward for our nation. U.S. LNG is a large part of cutting global emissions as quickly as possible, while supporting job growth at home. We can be both pro-climate and pro-natural gas, with Pennsylvania ready to play a key role in our energy future.”
